Season 1 Episode #20: Bronwyn Bate, Founder, Mettle - Supporting Domestic Violence Survivors
In the aftermath of this year’s International Women’s Day, we sat down with Mettle cofounder, Bronwyn Bate, the domestic violence charity whose ethical gifts give back, based in Perth. Their social enterprise employs women who have experienced homelessness as a result of domestic and family violence.
We wanted to spark some conversation that is great to have in the lead up and during this day each year, but like many other issues, these are conversations that need to be had daily. And when we chatted to Bronwyn in the lead up to this interview, we were shocked by the figures and statistics she stated around the issue.
Season 1 Episode #19: Hugh Miles - Creator of Pocket Smiles, The Book
In this episode we interviewed Hugh Miles. Hugh is an adventurer that was unfortunate enough to have been a victim of the 'king hit' aka 'the cowards punch'. The attack had long lasting effects on Hughs mental health. Luckily, Hugh survived this attack and battled through this time in his life to create the amazing not for profit 'book to make you smile' - Pocket Smiles.
All sales of PocketSmiles are donated to the Black Dog Institute to support mental health education and awareness programs. Hughs story is a great one of how mental health can affect us in different ways and how we can change the world for the better by bringing awareness to the topic.
Season 1 Episode #18: Lovemore N'Dou ~ Three Time World Boxing Champion, Lawyer, and Author
Lovemore N'dou is a three time world world boxing champion at the welterweight division, sparring partner of Floyd Mayweather Jnr, Lawyer, Business Owner, Author, and an academic (seven degrees!) and aspirations to becoming prime minister of South Africa.
In this episode, Lovemore explains how he went from growing up during the South African apartheid, watched his friend die in his arms as a teenager, was arrested for simply talking to a white girl as a supermarket, as well as overcoming other many racial and criminal injustices to becoming an elite athlete and successful lawyer. What a man.
Episode 17: Emma Doran ~ Comedian
Emma Doran is an Irish comedian. Quitting her day job, she took the plunge to be a full-time comedian, and oh, how it paid off. She's gone from copywriting about carpets and hairdressers for radio stations to blitzing the Irish comedy scene.
She's gone on to star on TV alongside some of Ireland's leading comedic acts such as Jason Byrne and Deirdre O'Kane. In this episode, Emma talks about her touch points with mental health, what the comedy circuit is like to navigate as a woman, as well a barrel of laughs and stories along the way.
Episode 16: David O'Connor ~ From Irish Roots to Aussie Business
In this episode, David regales growing up in Australia with his Irish roots and how some of the cultural aspects of being Irish hold both positive and negative impacts. Episode 15: Edward Jennings ~ Train the Lungs to Help the Mind
This episode features founder of the Lung Club Ed Jennings. Ed is an endurance runner who has used his passion for running to create the lung club community. The group meets regularly to walk or run together as a way of improving mental and physical health.
Ed is a big mental health advocate and much of the works he does is around increasing awareness around the topic.
The episode discusses the benefits of exercise on the brain, the dark side of being addicted to exercise the power of community, resiliency and of course Eds on take on mental health.
Episode 14: Hugo Toovey ~ Army Captain, 2x Cancer Survivor and Mental Health Advocate
This week's episode shares the incredible story of Hugo Toovey. Hugo is an army captain who has successfully beaten cancer twice.
He has since become a well recognised advocate for mens health through his organisation 25 Stay Alive.
This story is very inspirational and the impact Hugo is now having in the health space because of it is phenomenal.
Episode 13: Darragh Byrne ~ The Conscious King + Men’s Coach
This week's episode is with the hugely popular Darragh Byrne aka ' The Conscious King'.
Darragh is a leading mindset coach who is renowned for the remarkable psychological transformations he's made with his clients. Helping them live a happier, more fulfilled life simply by changing the way they think.
Darragh gives us some insight about his upbringing in Ireland, how his life drastically changed from 'living for the weekend' to living for the moment.
Episode 12: Chev Kelly ~ Integrative Healing And Impacts of Trauma
This week's episode we talk about 'anxious about being anxious' with the fascinating and chilled out integrative healer Chev Kelly.
Chev is quite literally changing lives through her amazing work with people struggling with mental health and as you'll learn she has a wide range of skill sets through her studies and experience in the health and wellness space.
Her area of expertise is trauma, and the link to past and family trauma, to our current behavioural traits but most importantly, how you can change them.

Cécile Caminade has her own podcast called ‘Asking for a Mate’, where she interviews Aussie blokes on all things from masculinity to emotions, and societal constructs. In fact, in this episode, we chat a lot about what ‘masculinity’ actually means, how certain ‘norms’ have been applied to it and how in many ways we might actually have to change our entire perspective on it.

The lads hit the half way mark of their inaugural season of These Lads Are Mental podcast. A show about normalising the topic of mental health in a light hearted fashion, with expert guests, everyday people and some laughs along the way. Sure isn't that what life is all about?
Hopefully, one day in the not too distant future, we can talk about mental health just like we would anything else in our everyday lives. That's our goal.
Episode 09: Joe Williams ~ Former NRL Player, Boxing Champion, First Nations Man And Suicide Survivor
Today’s episode is the unique, incredible story of Joe Williams.
Joe is an Australian sportsman who played rugby league and boxed professionally. His football career spanned from 2004 to 2008 but apart from being involved with professional sport for over 15 years, Joe, a suicide survivor, and mental health advocate, now spends his time working to inspire youth through motivational speaking workshops here in Australia and across the globe.
Episode 08: Ben Evans & Dan Parks ~ Former International Rugby Players
On this week’s show we have Ben Evans, former international Wales rugby union player. A prop, he has played for Ospreys, Cardiff Blues and Calvisano. He has played for Jersey and Moseley RFC and, Dan Parks, a.k.a. “Compass”, the Australian-born former Scotland international rugby union player and now coach.

Episode 07: Paul McVeigh - Professional Footballer
Paul McVeigh is a former professional and international footballer, with 20 caps for his country Northern Ireland, as well as 273 professional appearances with clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, Norwich City, Burnley and Luton Town. In 2010, he won his second league title with Norwich helping them gain promotion back to the Championship before calling a day on his professional career later that year.
Episode 06: Verushka Darling - Drag Queen Extraordinaire
“The only reason why I haven’t been attacked yet is because I can run fast in a pair of heels,” said Verushka during the episode. This comment had the biggest laugh on the episode but it was not with its harrowing undertone of what she has to go through in her working life.
